The Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Mrs. Josephine Piyo, and Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, the state’s Commissioner for Youth & Sports Development, were among others, including top officials of the institution were and dignitaries at the formal commissioning and handing over of a state-of-the-art ₦270 million worth Sports Complex at the University of Jos, Naraguta Campus by the Abdul Samad Africa Initiative (ASR Africa) on Thursday.
The recently completed project, an intervention under the Tertiary Education Grant Scheme, according to a statement by ASR Africa, represents a “continued commitment to supporting educational institutions through sustainable and impactful infrastructural interventions.”
The complex which features a 250-seat capacity spectator stand. lawn tennis and basketball courts, changing rooms, conveniences and other facilities, is billed for use during the Nigeria University Games (NUGA) being hosted by the University this month.
This intervention reflects the vision of ASR Africa’s Founder, Abdul Samad Rabiu, to invest in impactful, long-term projects and address critical needs in the education sector, which continues to strengthen Nigeria’s tertiary institutions and advance youth development across the country.
It also underscores the Initiative’s commitment to delivering sustainable and high-impact infrastructure that addresses critical needs within African Universities.
Addressing guests at the ocassion, the state governor, Caleb M. Mutfwang, expressed his government’s heartfelt appreciation to ASR Africa and its Chairman for donating the sports complex which he believes “will be a breeding ground where talents will be discovered and dreams realized.”
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs. Josephine C. Piyo, said: “This sports complex has come at the most appropriate time especially as the university is hosting the 2025 NUGA Games.”
Also speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Ashoms, appreciated the Chairman of ASR Africa, Abdul Samad Rabiu, for the noble project that will be remembered for generations to come, even as he commended its timely completion, expressing confidence that the complex will promote sports development, recreation and holistic learning among students of the university.
In his speech, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, expressed gratitude to Samad Rabiu for gesture which he described as a legacy that aligns with the university’s vision of creating a sports hub.
The University of Jos, he said, “has no project tied to a passionate philanthropist until today that we have Abdul Samad Rabiu Sports Complex in the University of Jos.”
Also addressing the gathering, Dr. Ubon Udoh, Managing Director and CEO of ASR Africa, described the project as “a testament to the Chairman of ASR Africa’s commitment to providing indigenous solutions through strategic interventions in education, health and social development across Nigeria.”
Among the dignitaries at the commissioning are NUGA Games officials, government officials, and the university top management.
