BUA Group, majority shareholder of the Cement Company of Northern Nigeria (CCNN), listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), on Thursday signed a contract with WartsilaOy of Finland to construct a 48 megawatt power plant for its Sokoto Cement line 3 in Sokoto State.
A statement by the group said the deal, whose value was not given, is coming two months after it announced the signing of a contract with world’s renowned cement manufacturing giant, CBMI, for construction of a new cement line in the state.
While Executive Chairman/Chief Executive of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, signed for his group, the Head of Africa, Wartsila Oy, Magnus Miemois signed for the multinational company known to provide services for power suppliers, marine, cement and mining industries.
Commenting on the deal, Rabiu said BUA was attracted by the incredible track record of Wärtsilä which has provided 1000mw of power in Africa, boasting of a total 70gigawatts of installed power plant capacity in 177 countries around the globe.
When constructed, he said the ultramodern power plant would bring the combined captive power of Sokoto Cement lines to about 100mw.
For him, “we can’t compromise on our quality. We are known to provide quality products and services to our customers and we are assured that Wartsila aligns with this vision of ours. They have an impeccable and intimidating track record and we are confident that they will deliver on their mandate.”
This, he continued, is given the fact that BUA is Nigeria’s second largest cement producer by volume with key focus on solidifying its leadership positions in the North West, South-South and South-East markets as well as the export markets in West Africa.
BUA’s current cement assets, the statement continued, include the 6m metric tons per annum Obu Cement I & II plants in Okpella, Edo State, CCNN’s 1.5m MTPA Kalambaina Cement Plant; and 500,000 Sokoto Cement plants.
