Officials of the National Agency For Food and Drug Administration & Control (NAFDAC), on Monday confiscated 26 packets of 500mg each from an unnamed supermarket in Ikoyi, Lagos for analysis of the content.
Seizure of the product which had no NAFDAC number as required by law, according to Prof. Isac Adewole, the Minister of Health, followed a tweet on Sunday, February 19, 2017, “about a certain pack of imported garri with the source given as India, which was found on the shelve of a Nigerian supermarket.”
The tweet, which he reproduced noted: “Imported garri from India now on the shelves of supermarkets in Nigeria?! Cc @AuduOgbeh @FmardNg @Fmohnigeria @DrJoeAbah @IsaacFAdewole- @hellotunde.”
After reading the tweet, Adewole his summary of actions taken by the Federal Government Ministries and agencies tagged: “What we know about Indian Garri” continued: “We knew we had work to do, and Monday 20th we did.”
This, he said, going by Updates from @NafdacNigeria, was followed by invitation of the supermarket’s management for further discussion at the Lagos office of NAFDAC.
It was also discovered from preliminary findings that “the product was said to be from Ghana, but packaged in UK.”
