NSE Index Gains 0.38% In Sept, Despite Loses By MTNN, Airtel, Dangcem

Trading activities on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) ended Monday with the benchmark All-Share index inching 0.38%, after closing at 27,630.56 basis points, from the 27,525.81bps it opened for the month.
The NSE Oil & gas recorded the biggest sectoral jump 20.63%; followed by the 8.56% rise by the NSE Insurance index; while the NSE Consumer Goods index inched 7.85%; NSE Pension, 7.30%; NSE Banking, 7.10%; NSE 30, 5.45%; NSE 50, 3.72%; NSE Mainboard, 3.2%; and NSE Lotus Islamic index, 3.05%.
The NSE Premium index was, however, the lone laggard, losing 1.81% in the period under review.
This was however despite loses suffered by the bourse’s biggest stocks, led by telecommunication giants- MTN Nigeria, who share price depreciated by N10.50, or 7.45% from N141 per share to N130.50; Dangote Cement, which also lost N10.50 or 6.48%, closing at N151.50, from N162.00; while Airtel Africa shed N15.50 or 4.79%, from its N323.50 opening price for the month.
The biggest decliners in percentage terms for the month was Champion Breweries, whose share price slipped 24.84% down, closing at N1.15; followed by Sterling Bank’s 50 kobo or 20% decline; Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals also shed 20%; Guinness Nigeria lost 17.87% from N41.40 to N34; just as Ikeja Hotels fell 17.48%.
On the month’s gainers’ side, the biggest riser was Cornerstone Insurance, which climbed 100% up, closing at 42 kobo; while UAC of Nigeria climbed 50% up on the back of its plan to divest its 64% stake in UACN Property Development Company to existing shareholders (READ MORE). Continental Reinsurance notched 42.76%; Seplat Petroleum Development Company closed 39.55% up; Okomu Oil Palm, 32.41%; Total Nigeria, 29.50%; International Breweries, 29.23%; just as Dangote Sugar closed 21.11% up better. NEM Insurance gained 21.05%; UPDC, 19.32%; PZ Cussons, 18.64%; Access Bank, 18.46%; FBN Holdings, 15.79%; Caverton Offshore improved 13.74%; Nestle Nigeria,12.04%; Lafarge Africa, 11.58%; Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, 11.03%; Dangote Flour Mills, 10.05%; and Zenith Bank, 8.72%.
