A delegation of the United Nations Security Council will on Sunday, March 5, 2017, begin a maiden two-day visit to Nigeria as part of its mission to the countries of the Lake Chad Basin (Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria).
The visit to Nigeria, according to a advisory by Lucky Musonda, the UN’s spokesman in Nigeria, would be specifically to the Maiduguri, centre of the country’s Boko Haram insurgency ravaged North East geo-political zone and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
The mission to Maiduguri on Sunday and Abuja the following day, the statement explained, “is aimed at enabling the UN body get first-hand information on the various issues affecting the country. This will be the first time the Council is visiting Nigeria. With the ongoing crisis in the North East and other challenges faced by the country.
The delegation, the statement continued, “will use the mission to engage with Federal and State Authorities, actors on the ground supporting national response efforts and visit selected affected populations.”
The team has scheduled press briefings at 5pm in Maiduguri and Abuja- 7pm on Sunday and Monday respectively.
