Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on Monday in Abuja announced that 84.004m voters are officially registered for the 2019 general elections, which begins next month.
He disclosed this when he presented the National Register of Voters to political parties in the country.
The number represents an increase by 10,059,772 registered voters, or 13.6% over the 73,944,312 registered voters across Nigeria previously announced as at January of 2018.
A breakdown of the figure showed that there are 44,405,439 or 53% male voters; and 39,598,645 or 47%, female voters.
According to the data of voters by Geopolitical Zones, the North West which has seven states, including Kano, the most populous and Katsina, President Muhammadu Buhari’s state of origin, recorded the highest number of voters with recorded the highest number with 20.2m, up from 18,505,984 in the figure published by INEC in January 2018. The South West from where Vice President Yemi Osinbajo hails followed with 16.3m, up from 14,626,800 registered voters; while the North Central, home to Senate President Bukola Saraki recorded 13.4m voters, up from 10,586,965; overtaking the South-South, which recorded 12.9m voters, up from 11,101,093 in January 2018. The Northeast zone, the hotbed of the Boko Haram war and home of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which had 11.3m voters, up from 9,929,015 registered voters; while the South East recorded 10m, as against 8,293,093 registered voters in 2018.
