Outgoing Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Umaru Ibrahim, was recently hosted to a special valedictory luncheon in Abuja by the Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI).
The second five-year tenure of Ibrahim, who replaced Alhaji Ganiyu Ogunleye, ends in December.
A statement by Bashir Nuhu, Director, Communication & Public Affairs Department at the corporation, quoted the former Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Dr. Mahmoud Isa-Dutse, as describing NDIC, under Ibrahim’s watch as the country’s best parastatal.
He recalled that during Ibrahim’s tenure, the corporation was outstanding in the implementation of its mandate towards contributing to the stability of the financial system.
During his tenure as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, for example, Isa-Dutse recalled that the NDIC was the most compliant in terms of corporate governance and excellence in service delivery, as opposed to other agencies that were constantly grappling with numerous internal disputes and challenges.
Also at the event, colleagues, friends, and well-wishers praised the outgoing MD for his leadership qualities and achievements like overseeing the corporation’s critical failure resolution interventions in the banking sector that saved thousands of depositors from the loss of their funds. He was also applauded for helping the NDIC navigate the corporation’s growth to take its prestigious position on the international scene as the Chair of the African Regional Committee of the International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI).
Also at the event, National President of the AANI and former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed D. Abubakar (rtd), described the NDIC boss as a senior brother and true Nigerian, whose leadership qualities, such as discipline, dedication and passion for excellence has translated to significant contributions to national development.
The association, he continued, decided to recognise Ibrahim’s contributions to the AANI, while celebrating achievements and legacy during his thirty-one years of service in the corporation, and especially during his last 10 years as MD/CE.
The AANI Monitor General, SEC 23, Engr. Mohammed Gambo Umar, who spoke on behalf of Ibrahim’s former course mates from the SEC 23/2001 at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), recalled Ibrahim’s intelligence, attention to detail, and sense of determination as qualities that resulted in his successful tenure at the NDIC.
The event featured a lecture on the environmental and socio-economic implications of the depletion of the Lake Chad Basin to the nation, delivered by the Director of Studies of NIPSS, Prof. Ibrahim Lawal Bashir.
He stressed the importance of patriotic leadership and the implementation of strategic development plans that would address the challenges of poverty and conflict affecting the region.
He described the outgoing MD/CE as a shining example of the kind of leadership capable of moving the nation towards a better future. He enjoined AANI members and those in positions of influence to support the government in addressing the nation’s challenges.
Responding, Ibrahim expressed appreciation for the honour bestowed on him by AANI, and to God for seeing him through his career and the entire board, management, and staff of the corporation, for the support.
