Biggest Debtor States incidentally are mainly the biggest revenue earners: Lagos, whose internally generated revenue is more than total for 30 states of the country owes N311.755bn as at June 30, 2017; Delta, one of the biggest receivers of the federal allocations owes N241.231bn; and Akwa Ibom, another big earner of FAAC allocation, N155.431bn.
Osun, one of the lowest revenue earner (both IGR and FAAC) showed up on the list released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on the third position with a total debt of N147.069bn, a figure Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola the Governor and his All Progressives Congress (APC) would struggle to explain in the run up to the coming gubernatorial election in the state next year.
The South West state even came ahead of Rivers, another major earner from oil, whose debt is put at N142.424bn; while neighbouring and fellow oil bearing state- Bayelsa recorded N140.177bn in total debt.
The smallest debt of N3.993bn for the period was by Anambra, one selling point Governor Willie Obiano and his ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) would expectedly sing about as it seeks a second four-year term. It was followed from afar by Yobe’s N13.581bn; and N22.251bn and N22.45bn by Katsina and Sokoto respectively.
