•Sounds Closing Gong
Five years after sounding the symbolic closing gong of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) in 2014, Pa Akintola Williams, only surviving signatory to its original Memorandum and Articles of Association of the charter, will on Monday, September 16, 2019, return to perform the ceremony.
The return of Pa Williams, who is also doyen of the accounting profession in the country, according to an invitation by the NSE, is part of activities to mark the centenary of his birth, one month and seven years after the August 9, date.
The NSE, on Friday, said its council and management are “celebrating one of its founding fathers, Mr. Akintola Williams, CFR, CBE, FCA with a symbolic Closing Gong Ceremony on Monday, September 16, 2019.”
Chief Williams had performed the symbolic ceremony while celebrating his 95th birthday.
Monday’s ceremony is also billed to hold 59 years and one day after he and some other distinguished Nigerians like Sir Louis Odimegwu-Ojukwu, who was the founding President of the then Lagos (today’s Nigerian) Stock Exchange, signed its Memorandum and Article of Association on September 15, 1960.
Other signatories included Chief Adeola Odutola, Ogbeni Oja of Ijebu-Ode, who later also became President.
