It was licenced in 1969 as Nigeria’s first merchant and later became NAL Merchant Bank. It became Sterling Bank Plc in the aftermath of the banking sector consolidation of 2004-2006 The business evolved from Nigeria Acceptances Limited (NAL) into a full-service commercial bank and subsequently reorganised into a financial holding-company structure. The HoldCo was established to allow Sterling to diversify beyond conventional commercial banking into non-interest banking and wealth management.
