The management of Access Bank Plc, on Monday night, wrote to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), denying recent rumour on social media that it is engaged in talks to acquire Union Bank Plc.
This is the second time in about 10 years that Access Bank is rumoured to be plotting acquisition of Nigeria’s second oldest commercial bank.
In the notice signed by its company secretary, Sunday Ekwochi, the bank advised the NSE and the general public “to discountenance such rumour as same is devoid of truth.
“The bank is not engaged in any discussion with Union Bank of Nigeria Plc or any of its shareholders regarding any such transaction,” the statement added.
The assurance may be difficult to believe, given that the bank late last year denied any plans to acquire Diamond Bank Plc, until the very last moment when the transaction pulled through (READ MORE).
