Market Update For August 19, 2026
The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) extended its recent decline on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, as continued profit-taking in selected large-cap stocks weighed on the benchmark index and kept investor sentiment cautious.
The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) fell for another session, reflecting renewed selling pressure in some of the market’s heavyweight counters. Although gains were recorded across several stocks, the advances were not enough to offset losses in key large-cap names.
ARADEL was among the biggest drags on the index, falling 9.99%, while NGXGROUP declined 2.34%. NEM lost 1.48%, with ETI, FIDELITYBK and GTCO also closing lower.
Trading Activity
Market activity strengthened during the session, with 1.14 billion shares worth ₦28.43 billion exchanged in 33,007 deals.
FTGINSURE dominated volume with 610.54 million shares, accounting for more than half of total market volume. However, the stock fell 9.81%, indicating strong selling pressure despite its high turnover.
MTNN recorded the highest traded value at ₦8.12 billion, followed by other actively traded large-cap stocks. The strong activity suggests that investors remain engaged but are increasingly repositioning their portfolios amid the market’s recent weakness.
Oil Market
Oil prices remained close to three-week highs on Wednesday as concerns over global supply disruptions and uncertainty surrounding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz supported crude prices.
Brent crude futures rose 18 cents, or 0.2%, to $91.20 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) gained 16 cents, or 0.19%, to $85.10 per barrel.
Both benchmarks had earlier reached their highest levels since late July before trimming gains. Brent touched its strongest level since July 30, while WTI reached its highest since July 31.
The gains were supported by uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a major global oil transit route. Conflicting statements from the United States and Iran have added to market uncertainty, while the expiration of a temporary ceasefire has raised concerns about further disruptions.
For Nigeria, sustained higher crude prices could provide support for government revenue and foreign-exchange earnings if oil production and exports remain stable. However, prolonged geopolitical tensions could also increase global energy costs and inflationary pressures, potentially affecting interest-rate expectations and investor sentiment across emerging markets.
Investor activity remained selective, with funds moving between individual stocks rather than across the broader market.
HMCALL led the gainers, rising 10% to ₦3.52. UACN advanced 6.56% to ₦177.85, while AVACAP and CAVERTON gained 6.29% and 5.32%, respectively. OMATEK also rose 3.29%.
On the downside, INTENEGINS fell 10% to ₦4.77, followed by ARADEL at -9.99% and FTGINSURE at -9.81%. UNIVINSURE and REDSTAREX also recorded significant losses.
The sharp movements across both gainers and losers suggest that investors are becoming more stock-specific, focusing on valuation, earnings prospects and short-term momentum.
Technical Analysis
The ASI remains under short-term selling pressure after extending its recent decline. Weakness in heavyweight stocks continues to limit the index’s recovery, although the relatively balanced market breadth suggests that selling pressure is not widespread.
The 240,000-point region remains an important psychological support level. Holding above this area could encourage bargain hunting and support consolidation, while a sustained break below it could expose the index to further downside.
Trading volume will remain an important indicator. Continued declines accompanied by high turnover could signal further distribution, while a rebound supported by stronger volume would provide evidence of renewed buying interest.
Outlook
The near-term outlook for the NGX remains cautious as investors continue to lock in gains and rotate into selected counters.
The market’s strong year-to-date performance could encourage additional profit-taking, particularly in stocks that have recorded substantial gains. However, continued advances in selected equities show that investors remain willing to deploy capital where valuations and fundamentals appear attractive.
Higher oil prices could provide some support for Nigeria’s external position and energy-related stocks, particularly if crude prices remain elevated. However, geopolitical developments around the Strait of Hormuz and global monetary-policy expectations remain key risks to investor sentiment.
Overall, the NGX is likely to remain volatile in the short term. A recovery in heavyweight stocks would be crucial for the index to regain upward momentum, while sustained selling could push the market into deeper consolidation.
